About the club:

The Rugby club of Michigan Tech is an organization devoted to playing rugby and having fun. We are open to all levels of skill and experience, and will accept anyone willing to learn. We are part of the Wisconsin rugby union, and have recently become USA Rugby members. In the meantime we schedule tournaments with teams in both Wisconsin and Michigan, and play in as many tournaments as we can find.

MTU RFC is dedicated to growing the sport of rugby football at MTU in keeping with the legacy of competitiveness and excellence of the sport. Our goal is to provide opportunities for members of the community to participate in Rugby at multiple levels through partnership with Michigan Tech University and our sponsors.

Coaching Clinic

I spent the day with 30, ‘Cheese Heads’ in Green Bay this past weekend as 30 coaches from Wisconsin and the UP (me) earned their Level 200 Coaching Certifications after an all day clinic put on by four coaching instructors from USA Rugby. The all day event focused on different aspects of the game. The tackle and Scrum were two key components of the all day event and especially the law and safety surround them. I am glad to say I passed and looking forward to networking and working with my fellow coaches in WI to make the WI league the best in the country, with the highest level of rugby!

MTU Rugby gets a BAMF Scrum Machine!!

Well after lots of secret talks, meetings and begging MTU rugby club took delivery last week of our very own Premier Rhino Rugby Sled!! I can not underestimate how big of an achievement this is for such a young club such as ours. This is something that will last the club many, many years to come and will make our ‘pack’ even better than it has in the past. If only they made a machine that we could use to practice with our backs😉

The rugby club would like to thank the University Parent’s fund as well as the University Undergraduate Government for the funds to purchase this piece of equipment. We look forward to the spring when all the snow has disappeared to try it out for the first time, which should be around June😉

I would also like to thank the outgoing rugby Eboard and those before them in making this happen, especially the work of outgoing treasurer Andy VerSteeg for all his hard work in securing funding and purchase.- Rhys
